Next Tuesday, October 28th, is the Fall Festival at TALES at 6:00pm. Come join the community in celebrating the season with activities and snacks. Wednesday October 29th, 2014
Wednesday will be our first field trip of the year. We will be going to the Museum of Natural History. Since we are taking the subway, we will be leaving as soon as possible after all the children arrive at school. Please make sure your child is on time to school that day and prepared with the appropriate clothing for the weather. They should wear comfortable walking shoes as well. Please talk to your child about safety on the subway and field trips. It will be very important that they are good listeners and follow directions while remaining calm. Thank you for all of your assistance! It will be an amazing trip! We have kicked off our reading and writing about memoirs unit. Throughout this unit students will be reading memoirs from several different authors as well as getting a chance to write their own personal memoir. Through a memoir, they will recount an important memory in their life and look closely at how it has influenced them as a person. Perhaps they learned an important lesson or realized how important a family member is to them through this memory. Patricia Polacco has written many memoirs about her life which are rich in vocabulary, imagery, and character description. We will be reading several of her books, but children may want to go to pick some more up at the local library or order more from scholastic. Our goal in these units is to expose students to a genre of literature that is full of important lessons and wonderful vocabulary. You can help us achieve this goal by talking to your child about the characters in their books, providing them with more complex synonyms to describe their characters and asking them how they know their character is that way. Ask them to prove statements they make about their book and relay to you why that observation is important. Thank you in advance for all of you support!
The third grade will be taking the subway on Wednesday, October 29th to the Museum of Natural History. We will be visiting the Asian and African Peoples exhibit. This is our first official trip as a third grade, so we are very excited!
We will be doing a lot of walking so please make sure your child wears comfortable shoes, like sneakers. Please also pay attention to the weather report for that day. Send your child appropriately dressed for the weather. Each class will have two chaperones to accompany us. Please keep in mind that if you are not chosen to chaperone this particular trip, there will be many more trips coming up. ***Please talk to your child about walking through busy sidewalks and taking the subway. We will have many discussions about this as well as the trip comes closer. There is no school on Monday, October 13th because of Columbus Day.
